Season X Recap & Fall Registration

SEASON X RECAP

Very sorry for the delay but better late than never. As always, wanted to thank everyone for their contribution to the league. Spring is the longest season (23 weeks) and requires a lot of assistance to ensure all runs smooth.

A big congrats to ONE BANGERS. While they went through a mid-season slump, they ended the regular season on an eight game winning streak and won the chip via a 4-3 OT win over the Griffins.

A notable game that drew a pretty big (GTA) crowd was the first round matchup between Super Soldiers and Black Knights, which went into triple overtime and saw almost 90 shots on net with Ashby and Rawlley making big save after big save.

As for the awards, voting was close in all categories. Below are the list of winners as selected by the GM’s:

Elan Hahn (Hart – MVP)
Michael Yu (Vezina – Goalie)
Mike Reid (Norris – Defenceman) (B2B Winner)
Jacob Steinfeld (Selke – Defensive Forward) (B2B Winner)
Lambert Choi (Most Improved)
Michael Yu (Conne Smythe – Playoff MVP)

And statistical awards went to a trio of newcomers:

Csaba Czako (Art Ross – Most points)
Christian Dragani (Rocket Richard – Most goals)
Richard Farnum (Wingman – Most assists)

The complete awards list can be viewed here.

FALL SEASON

Season 9 Recap and Season 10 News

SEASON 9 RECAP:

In what can be described as the most balanced season to date, with all 8 playoff seeds undecided going into the last week of the regular season, the North Stars came out victorious by beating the Coyotes, Nordiques and Kings. In the semi-finals and finals, the North Stars were either tied or down by one going into the third period but came out victorious. Congratulations on the well deserved win!

SEASON 9 AWARDS:

A total of 11 players averaged 3 or more points per game in the playoffs, but Stan Koudlai had a playoff run never seen in this league, collecting 17 points in 3 playoff games. To put that into perspective, he almost matched his regular season point total in only 3 games.

Other award recipients include:

  • Mike Reid was the runaway winner for each the Hart and Norris Trophies (MVP & Best Defenseman)
  • Bobbie Glatter won the Vezina Trophy (Best Goalie)
  • Tai Do and Jacob Steinfeld were co-winners of the Selke Trophy (Best Defensive Forward)
  • Imran Jafri won the MIP Award (Most Indian/Improved Player)

SEASON 10 NEWS:

Who would’ve thought a simple idea by Jeremy McIntyre, brought to life by Derrick Lee-Shanok, would lead to the creation of GTA Inline and that we’d make it to season 10? (Little known fact, the league was originally named “SMRL – Sunday Morning Rollerhockey League”).  To celebrate this milestone season, each winning captain was asked to captain again where only one will have bragging rights as a 2-time winning captain. We used the winning team names and gave each jersey a refresh.

So without further delay, below are the rosters along with jersey designs. You can click on each picture to enlarge.

One final note, we want to thank everyone for making the league a success. It’s only possible because we have great people who share the same vision of what a recreational league can and should be, and contribute in whatever way they can.

Merry holidays and happy everything! See you all January 6!

Season 6 Recap and Season 7 Announcement

Well, now we don’t have to wait for the Game of Thrones books to be completed to know how it ends.

Congratulations to The White Walkers who defeated the Starks in a tight playoff battle, narrowly defeating them 4-3.  Wearing a crown of ice was playoff MVP Anthony Thomas who continued to lead the offense for his team with 2 goals and 3 assists in the playoffs.  Congratulations Anthony on winning the Conne Smythe Trophy!

A round of applause as well to all the regular season award winners, it was a tight points race right to the final game of the season.     Special mention to Vito Sanzo for winning the Most Improved Player award.  Vito stood out in all the GM’s eyes with his strong play and   impressive 3 G 6 A season.

Season 5 – Final Recap

Season 5’s final was a hard fought battle between Super Soldiers and Green Lantern Corp. Both teams were primed for battle and had their sights set on lifting the GTA Inline (aka Thompson) Cup in the air.

Karl Johnston gave the Super Soldiers a one goal lead in the 1st period which they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Led by Ramin Khaze and Dave Singh, Green Lantern sent wave after wave of offensive attempts but could not break the solid defensive structure of the Super Soldiers.

Going into the 3rd, the score was still a close 2-1 game but Green Lantern’s light finally dimmed out in the third and the Super Soldiers smelling the blood, went on full attack mode to defeat Green Lantern 7-2. Congratulations to the MVP of the playoffs, Karl Johnston who had a dominating 3 goal, 2 assist game and to everyone else on Super Soldiers.

Congratulations are also in order to all the other Season 5 award winners. Special mention goes to Stan Koudlai and Dave Steinfeld who were voted for by the captains as winners of the Hart (Most Valuable) and Selke (Best Defensive Forward) trophies. Both players were part of a mid-season reshuffling which saw Koudlai traded from Stark Industries to Heralds of Galactus and Steinfeld who selflessly moved from his regular position on defense to forward to help stabilize his team’s lineup. A full list of all the award winners can be found here:

Thank you to everyone for a great season. Season 6 starts on July 16th so stay tuned for the new season’s roster announcement coming soon.

GTA Inline League News and Updates

For the 2016/17 season, the NHL trade deadline is March 1st.  What does that mean to us?  Absolutely nothing.

For those of you who haven’t heard, there has been a delay in receiving this year’s jerseys.  Unfortunately, we were notified last week that the shipping company had lost our jerseys in transit.  It is believed that they were mistaken for a shipment of Tom Brady’s jerseys which also seems to be disappearing these days.  Thankfully, our vendor has worked out an arrangement with a local print shop who will be reprinting the jerseys, but unfortunately this means another 2-3 weeks before they are ready.

While we normally try to wait until at least mid-season to make changes to team lineups, we decided to take this jersey fiasco and follow the directions of Queen B to make it into some lemonade.  So with all the (sort of) topical headlines used up, we have some trades to announce.  #1 – Moving from Stark Industries is Stan Koudlai who will be heading to the Heralds of Galactus for Anthony Thomas.  #2 – Green Lantern and War Zone will be switching goalies with Corey Whalen moving to War Zone for Michael Yu.  #3 – Lastly, Speed Force had a player who could no longer commit to his team, so he will be replaced by David Steinfeld who came in as a replacement player last week and seemed to gel well with the group.

Thank you everyone for continuing to make us the best league in the GTA and a huge Thank You to all the traded players.  We know how hard/weird it is to be traded and we do not make these trades without much consideration and many lengthy discussions.  See you all Sunday.

New Year’s Announcement

Happy New Year!  I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season and ended 2016…awake.

Statistically, only 16.7% of the new year’s resolutions made become a reality and this year won’t be any different.  Yes, unfortunately I have to regretfully break it to you that only 9 of you will win Season 5’s GTA Inline Cup!

All terrible jokes aside, I hope you are all excited and ready to start our 5th season.  Week 1 will be this coming Sunday January 8th from 8:30-11am at Stephen Leacock Arena.   The season will run till June 18th at a cost of $230/person.  Please send the registration fee via e-transfer to derrick@leeshanok.ca or bring your cash this Sunday.

The full schedule will be posted later this week, but for now come check out your team roster and jerseys!
